Summer 2024
Place to collect our plans for the summer of 2024. See also the summer ’24 calendar.
Vacation
We are going to Tennessee for a week: August 12 through 17.
Camps
Anderson and Jeferson both get a sports camp. Anderson also has the special “Bear Trax” camp, sponsored by the police department. Mélani has formal violin lessons over summer.
- Soccer camp for Jeferson.
- Football (American) camp for Anderson.
Day Trips
In addition to the week-long vacation, we want to schedule some day trips or other activities. Here are some thoughts.
- Jeferson mentions a “car museum.” There seems to be one on the Eastern Shore. Note: if we’re actually going to the beach, this may also be something we do on the way to, or from, the beach.
- Go to Sandy Point beach, near Annapolis.
- Another one from Jeferson: when will we go to the zoo again? Although this may be something for spring break.
- Columbia lakefront activities?
- Swimming
- Movie
Summer “School” Activities
Principle: three days a week do educational stuff, chores, etc. One day a week we are planning to do something together. One day a week is the entire day on phones or whatever. Note: if you have a camp, you don't have to do the educational stuff and chores that week, but you also don't have a whole day “off.”
Educational stuff, chores, etc.
The educational part has the following goals:
- Mastery of the English (Mélani) and Spanish (Jeferson) language.
- Being able to execute written instructions.
- Communicate efficiently through reading and writing.
- Improve ability to write legibly.
Educational activities:
- Mélani: studying words/sentences of the week.
- English 1: Clothes, also inverted. Take the test.
- English 2: Foods, also inverted. Take the test.
- English 3: Body Parts, also inverted. Take the test.
- Mélani: violin lesson and violin practice.
- Mélani and Jeferson: Duolingo.
- Anderson and Jeferson: Reading a story or article and writing a summary, on paper.
- Everyone: write a story, at least one page, which has a beginning, a middle, and an end, and in which the main characters learns something, or discovers something. Can be electronically or on paper.
- Everyone: watching a documentary and afterward answering questions from Ms. Nicoline.
- Everyone: have a conversation in which ideas are explored with an adult. This can be either written (email, WhatsApp) or verbal.
- Practice the American states on the map. Know all 50 states and be able to point them out on the map.
Examples of chores:
- Prepare food based on written instructions. This can be lunch, dinner, or bake a batch of cookies.
- Run a load of laundry, including hanging it up to dry and sorting it when it's dry.
- Go with Ms. Nicoline grocery shopping, help getting things in the store, help carrying things into the house and putting it away (under supervision).
- Dust and vacuum your room.
Examples of things to do together:
- Go to the beach the week of July 15-19.
- Go to the pool.
- Go on a walk / hike (depending on the weather).
